Mercado de Abasto in Asunción: shopping for your household
Mercado de Abasto is a working food-distribution market that also serves retail buyers. For a household, its usefulness depends on the quantities you can use, the quality offered that day and the cost of getting everything home. Compare the complete shop, not just the price of one box.

Where to go and when
The municipality locates the market on Avenida Defensores del Chaco, also known as Calle Última. Use a map pin for Mercado de Abasto de Asunción, rather than the separate Mercado 4. The municipality also distinguishes the municipal complex from an adjoining private market; agree on the entrance or block when arranging pickup.
A 12 March 2026 municipal report says the complex operates almost around the clock and closes on Good Friday and New Year’s Day for deep cleaning. This describes the whole market, not a promise that a particular retail stall, food counter or entrance is open whenever you arrive. For a first household shop, daylight makes comparison and identifying the return pickup point easier; ask a chosen seller when their retail service is available.

Ask for the selling unit before comparing prices
The municipal report confirms both wholesale and retail activity. Ask “¿Venden por kilo o solo por caja?” and “¿Cuánto pesa esta caja?” before treating two quoted prices as comparable. Check the produce across the box, including ripeness and damaged pieces, and consider how much you will actually eat before it spoils. These are buying decisions, not a claim that every stall has the same policy.
No reliable current market-wide price list was established. The municipality’s comments about tomato prices in March were a dated snapshot, not a price promise for October. Confirm payment methods and the total at each seller before produce is packed.
Vehicle fees and getting your shopping home
A 10 January 2025 municipal explanation said pedestrian entry was free, vehicles entered without that charge from 06:00 to 18:00, and cars or pickups paid Gs. 5,000 during the overnight charging period. These are historical published terms, not a verified 2026 tariff. Ask the gate about the current fee, receipt and where you may load before driving in.
The March 2026 report describes heavy-truck movements and paving repairs near wholesale Block A. A June 2026 works update also documents drainage works around the market. Neither establishes today’s closures: check the route on the day and avoid assuming an older diversion still applies.
For a modest purchase, a nearby supermarket may remain more practical once transport and wasted food are included. If you do shop here, choose an identifiable pickup point away from unloading lanes and take bags you can carry comfortably.
