Learning Guaraní in Asunción: classes, public resources and a realistic start
Sources checked 3 November 2026
You may want to follow family conversations, understand more of what you hear in the barrio or learn to write a language you already speak. Those are different starting points. Before choosing a Guaraní course, decide what you want to do with it and whether you need a beginner class, literacy practice or a university program.

As of November 3, 2026, the official sources below provide useful places to begin, but we have not verified an open, general-public beginner intake for November. A dated course announcement is not a standing invitation to enroll. You can still start with public reference materials while asking institutions about their next suitable group.
Ask for the course that matches your level
When contacting a provider, explain your starting point precisely. “I understand family conversations but struggle to write” is different from “I do not speak Guaraní.” Ask whether the class teaches Guaraní as a second language, what language the teacher uses for explanations, and how much time is spent speaking and listening.
If your aim is conversation, ask about guaraní comunicativo or a beginner course for adults. If you already speak it, ask about reading, spelling and writing. A course advertised for teachers, interpreters or public employees may assume skills you have not developed yet. A certificate title alone will not tell you whether the lessons fit.
SPL: resources now, workshops when announced
The Secretaría de Políticas Lingüísticas maintains an official dictionary directory, including the Academia de la Lengua Guaraní's dictionary and a linked Android app. Begin at that directory rather than an unofficial app listing. A dictionary helps you check a word; it does not replace explanations, pronunciation feedback or a sequence of beginner lessons.
For a more visual starting point, DamPy, the SPL's audiovisual multilingual dictionary, organizes material into food, fauna and flora. Choose one small subject that interests you instead of trying to memorize an entire list. Record the source beside each new word so you can return to the original entry.
The SPL has offered public introductory activities. Its April 2, 2024 announcement described a free virtual workshop covering the alphabet, greetings, basic conversations and spelling. That workshop belongs to April 2024; its old registration link is not evidence of a current course.
Recent announcements also require a careful look at the audience. The July 8, 2026 course notice was directed at INEPEO personnel. Do not assume a government-supported class accepts any resident. Use the SPL's official website to find current notices or contact details and ask specifically about activities open to adults outside the public service.

Planning steps in text
- Choose a learning goal: Conversation, reading or writing?
- Check the next intake: Confirm level, schedule and total cost.
- Build a small routine: Use reliable resources and practise.
University study: distinguish a degree from a short course
The Universidad Nacional de Asunción's 2022 institutional guide lists Lengua Guaraní among the Instituto Superior de Lenguas offerings and places the language programs at Avenida España 1098, in Asunción. This is a university-study lead, not confirmation of a beginner evening class or current registration period.
An ISL journal presentation published in 2019 mentions extracurricular Guaraní communication courses. Ask the institute whether a comparable short course is running now, when the next intake opens and whether non-degree students can participate. Confirm the teaching location before travelling: an institutional address does not establish the classroom for a particular group.
What to ask before committing
Request the full schedule, start and finish dates, in-person or online format, minimum level and attendance requirements. Ask for the total cost, including registration, materials and any certificate or assessment fee. No verified current fee is quoted here.
If you need accessibility arrangements, ask before enrolling. For online classes, check whether sessions are live, whether recordings are included and which time zone the timetable uses. If Spanish is also new to you, say so: a beginner Guaraní class may still rely on Spanish explanations.
Build a small routine while you wait
Choose a manageable weekly goal: understanding an introduction, naming things in your kitchen or asking a familiar person a simple question. Keep a notebook with the word, its context and the reference you used. Ask a willing speaker to help with a short exchange; do not turn somebody's working day into an unplanned lesson.
More advanced learners can explore COREGUAPA's help page, which explains how to search a corpus for words in context. It is a reference tool, not a graded beginner course.
