Centro Paraguayo Japonés: finding a class you can keep coming back to
Sources checked 30 October 2026
A weekly class can give life in Asunción a little more shape: somewhere to go, something to practise and familiar faces you see again. The Centro Paraguayo Japonés (CPJ) is worth investigating if you want that kind of routine. Its municipal programme spans languages, music, dance, visual arts and exercise. The useful question is which department has a course that fits your level, timetable and budget.

The centre is at Julio Correa and Domingo Portillo. Its official institutional page explicitly includes both Paraguayans and people from other countries. You do not need to be Japanese to enquire. Admission requirements, however, belong to the particular course; the website does not establish a single document checklist for every newcomer.
Start with the activity, then the department
For someone settling into the city, there are several quite different ways to use the CPJ. A group language or dance class offers repeated contact with other learners. An individual music lesson may suit a specific skill better, but provides less group time. A public performance is another way to get to know the place before committing to a course, provided there is one on the current programme.
The municipal course overview lists visual arts, computing, martial arts and fitness alongside the performing arts. Registration is handled by the relevant departmental office. This matters when you enquire: a reply about languages does not confirm the timetable or fees for the gym.
For a first conversation, name one activity and describe your starting point. “I am an adult beginner looking for a weekly group class” is much easier to answer than “What can I do there?” If Spanish is still difficult, ask whether the teacher can accommodate that before paying. A course about another language is not automatically taught through English.
Music and dance: check the late-year entry route
The 2026 music announcement includes piano, strings, Paraguayan harp, guitar and singing. It distinguishes individual and group lessons and says enrolment can continue during the year when spaces exist. Registration with the education ministry closes in May.
That distinction is especially important if you are reading this in October. Ask whether you can join for recreational study now, whether your chosen course requires the ministry registration, and what you would be joining midway through. An annual programme remaining online does not prove that a place is available this week.
The 2026 dance page includes adult options and describes a similar distinction between year-round enrolment and programmes with a May registration deadline. It directs readers to the academy for fees. If returning after a long break, ask about the actual level of the group rather than choosing by age label alone.
For music, find out whether you need an instrument at home and how much practice the course expects. For dance, ask about footwear, clothing and whether a trial or introductory session is possible. These are questions to ask, not services we have verified the CPJ offers.

Languages: old timetables are not the next intake
The March 2026 language announcement advertised English, Portuguese, Japanese and Mandarin. Its example courses ended in June. It listed a Gs. 52,000 enrolment fee, but that is a dated reference, not a verified quotation for your next course.
Ask for the next start date, remaining places and a total for the full period you intend to study. Check whether the quoted course charge is monthly, per module or for the whole course, and whether materials cost extra. The dates and amounts on an old announcement cannot answer those questions for a new intake.
For Spanish learning specifically, compare the options in our Spanish-study guide rather than assuming the CPJ has a currently available Spanish group. Its older general catalogues and newer intake notices do not list exactly the same languages.
Adults over 60: free and paid options coexist
The 2026 older-adult programme lists free exercise, beginner English and choir activities for people aged 60 and over. It separately identifies self-managed activities with charges, including Paraguayan dance, ñandutí and painting. Ask which category your chosen activity falls into and whether places remain.
This distinction is useful for budgeting. “Activities for older adults” does not mean every class at the centre is free. If mobility, hearing or another access need affects participation, describe the accommodation you need to the department. The reviewed pages do not verify step-free access to every classroom or the availability of specific support.
Contact and plan a useful first visit
Use the CPJ location in maps and confirm the entrance with the department. Ayolas 129, shown in the culture website's footer, is the central cultural administration address, not the CPJ class venue.
The general contact published by the centre is centroparaguayojapones@gmail.com and 021 607 276/8. Its overview directs gym enquiries to 0986 756437, visual arts to 0993 385381 and dance to 0984 111640. These are public enquiry contacts, not a guarantee of an immediate reply.
Official office details conflict. The music-specific page and the general overview give different music office hours and contacts. Dance pages also give different office hours. Use the central contact or the current CPJ page to confirm which office is handling your course before travelling. Do not confuse office-opening hours with lesson times.
For a weekly commitment, test the journey at roughly the hour you would attend. Consider the return trip as well as the outward one, especially after an evening lesson. Our transport guide explains the main options without promising a particular bus or fare for your address.
