Art, history and the riverfront

A first visit to Centro Cultural del Puerto

Checked 13 October 2026

Asunción’s old port building now brings together exhibitions, cultural events and, for the moment, La Recova’s craft shops. You can build a first visit around a gallery show or go when the halls fill for a fair. This guide helps you choose the right day, find the building and know what to check before leaving.

What to see on an ordinary visit

Art in Espacio Cultural Itaú

The current exhibition is Maestros del Arte Popular e Indígena II: El fuego que queda. It brings together work by 14 Paraguayan popular and Indigenous artists in ceramics, textiles, wood and drawing. Curators Fredi Casco and Fernando Allen revisit a project first shown 13 years earlier.

The organizer’s exhibition announcement gives Wednesday–Saturday, 14:00–20:00, through 28 November 2026. The official Agendarte listing describes Espacio Cultural Itaú as free to visit; confirm the current program before making a special trip.

La Recova’s temporary craft shops

The artisans and traders of La Recova are working from the cultural center’s ground floor while their historic shopping corridor is restored. It is a useful stop for crafts, textiles and traditional pieces, with the chance to browse several shops in one place.

The Secretaría Nacional de Cultura announced this temporary location on 29 August 2026, with shop hours of Monday–Saturday, 08:30–18:00. That timetable applies to the shops. Ask before assuming the rest of the building is open at the same time.

The port building itself

The port opened in 1907, handling goods and river passengers. Its appearance changed significantly in 1961, when the earlier neoclassical façade was replaced by a more modern treatment. The restored building began its cultural-center life in December 2023. This layered history is part of the appeal: a working piece of the city’s river story has found a new public use.

Official venue documents identify exhibition halls, an auditorium and the muelle, or quay. What you can enter depends on the day’s program. Check the signs or ask staff which rooms are open instead of expecting a fixed, all-building museum route.

Oxígeno 2026: October 23–25

If you want a livelier introduction, Oxígeno Feria de Arte is a timely reason to visit. The organizer advertises art to view and buy, talks, publishing activities, awards, music and food. You can go simply to look, listen and discover artists.

Show the QR on your phone at the entrance. The organizer says the same ticket works for all three days, so you can return without obtaining a new one. Save it somewhere easy to find before you leave. These are the fair’s hours; access to the Itaú exhibition and La Recova shops during the fair is not separately confirmed.

Map and getting to the entrance

Search for Centro Cultural del Puerto de Asunción on Av. Stella Maris. This map uses the venue embedded in the cultural authority’s own Agendarte listing. Earlier official visitor directions describe the main entrance at Avda. República and Colón; follow the event’s latest arrival instructions and signs on the day.

If you are taking a taxi or ride app, use the named cultural center rather than a general search for “Puerto de Asunción,” then check the drop-off point with your driver. For buses, fares and ride options, see our getting around Asunción guide. Parking arrangements and an event-specific gate have not been confirmed for this guide.

A simple first visit

  1. Choose your main reason to go. For the exhibition and shops, Wednesday–Saturday between 14:00 and 18:00 is the overlap in their published schedules. Recheck both before leaving, especially around the fair.
  2. Give yourself room to browse. As a suggested starting point, allow an hour or so for a gallery and the craft shops, with more time if you enjoy talking about the work. An Oxígeno visit can easily be a separate plan.
  3. Add one nearby stop if you feel like it. Our Calle Palma guide and Costanera guide can help you plan the rest of a downtown outing. Choose the route and timing for the weather and your energy.
  4. Sort out the practical bits first. Bring your charged phone for the fair QR. If step-free access, a lift or accessible toilets are important to your visit, ask the venue before going; we have not verified those facilities.

For a specific access or program question, the Secretaría Nacional de Cultura lists ccpuertoasu.snc@gmail.com as the venue contact. We have not confirmed a permanent café, a standing guided-tour schedule or whole-building opening hours.
