Ycuá Bolaños memorial: planning a respectful visit
Sources checked 6 November 2026
The Sitio de Memoria y Centro Cultural 1A Ycuá Bolaños occupies the site of the supermarket fire of 1 August 2004. It is a place of remembrance shaped by survivors and families, alongside a working cultural center. Visit to listen and understand, with time to pause. It should not be treated as another quick photo stop on a sightseeing checklist.

What 1A means
The name refers to 1 August, the date of the fire. Hundreds of people died, and the effects continue through families and the wider community. This guide avoids turning disputed or differently defined casualty totals into a headline.
The Secretaría Nacional de Cultura's account of the anniversary describes the continuing work of survivor and family organisations. Remember that people you meet may have a personal connection, but do not presume that they want to explain it to a visitor.
Location and planning
The SNC's official directory places the site at Avenida Santísima Trinidad and Avenida Artigas and lists ycuabolanos@cultura.gov.py as a contact. Locate the memorial on a map. Ask which entrance to use if you have a guided visit or access requirements.
This is a separate destination in Trinidad, not a stop in the compact historic-center walking route. Use our getting-around guide to plan transport. We have not verified a fixed journey time from downtown; traffic and your starting point matter.
Opening hours: confirm before travelling
Published timetables conflict. The SNC's public-space regulation, sections 9–10 gives a narrower ordinary schedule than ABC Color's August 2026 visitor report. We could not establish which timetable applies on every current day.
Email the site before making a special journey, especially for weekends or holidays. Ask whether general visiting and guided visits have different hours, whether you need a reservation, and how much time the proposed route takes. The regulation describes general admission as free; booking or hiring spaces for an event is a separate matter.
What the spaces help you understand
The cultural center opened in 2022. The SNC's opening programme describes a place combining remembrance, public space, education and cultural activity. Water and light form part of the architectural experience.
ABC Color's visitor report identifies preserved elements of the former supermarket, including the original ramp and staircase, alongside memorial spaces. Ask a guide to explain their meaning rather than assuming that every architectural feature is simply decorative. The presence of cultural activities does not make all rooms available to casual visitors on every day.
A useful approach is to begin by asking staff where the visitor route starts, then move slowly through the memorial areas that are open. Allow a generous gap before your next appointment rather than imposing a fixed sightseeing pace. If the material feels overwhelming, pause or leave the route; there is no requirement to see everything.
Arrange a visit that suits your group
For a guided visit, contact ycuabolanos@cultura.gov.py with your preferred day, group size and language or access needs. Ask whether a guide is available and wait for confirmation. We have not verified an English- or Portuguese-language tour, a continuously available online booking form, or a fully step-free route through every space.
For children, explain beforehand that this is a memorial to a real tragedy. Decide how much detail is appropriate, stay available for questions and be ready to shorten the visit. A school visit reported in a news story is not evidence that every exhibition is suitable for every child.
Respectful visiting
Keep your voice low in remembrance areas. Ask about photography and seek consent before photographing people; avoid posed photographs beside memorial names or private acts of mourning. Do not touch objects, enter closed rooms or photograph someone telling a personal story without permission.
Commemorations around 1 August are especially important to families. Check the current programme rather than reusing a previous year's times. Attend in a listening role, leave routes clear and follow the organisers' guidance.
Questions before you go
Is admission free? The official regulation says general access is free. Confirm arrangements for a guided visit or a specific activity directly with the site.
Can I arrive without checking? A spontaneous visit is possible only when the site is open, but conflicting published hours make advance confirmation sensible.
Where can I learn more? Use the official sources below and our Asunción museums guide to plan other cultural visits. Give this memorial its own time.
