Overnight trip
Saltos del Monday: An Overnight Trip from Asunción
The Saltos del Monday are an overnight trip from Asunción: waterfalls on the Monday river in Presidente Franco, right next to Ciudad del Este on Paraguay's eastern border. The road takes several hours each way, so pair the falls with a night in the Ciudad del Este area. Here is the practical información: where the falls are, how to get there and what the parks offer.
Where it is
The falls are in the district of Presidente Franco, in Alto Paraná, about 10 km from Ciudad del Este according to Visit Paraguay, the national tourism site. They drop close to where the Monday river runs into the Paraná, near the border with Brazil.
Two parks give access. The Parque Saltos del Monday belongs to the Municipality of Presidente Franco and is run by a concession company, Última Hora reported in February 2026. Parque Aventura Monday is a private park of 7 hectares facing the falls, about 8 km from the commercial center of Ciudad del Este and the Friendship Bridge, according to its own site, parqueaventuramonday.com.
Getting there from Asunción
By bus. Buses to Ciudad del Este leave from the Estación de Buses de Asunción, the city's bus station, whose timetable lists many companies (see the box above). Two companies of the Grupo NASA also list buses to Presidente Franco itself. The timetable does not give journey times, so ask at the counter. Our bus station notes explain how the station works.
By car. A routing estimate gives about 336 km by road from central Asunción to the falls, roughly 5 hours of driving without stops.
From Ciudad del Este to the falls. The falls are about 7 km by road from the Ciudad del Este bus terminal (a routing estimate). Uber and Bolt both list Ciudad del Este among their cities, and Uber also lists Presidente Franco, so a ride app or a taxi is the simplest option. A 2025 travel guide describes local buses from Ciudad del Este to Presidente Franco, then a walk of about 1 km to the entrance; we found no official line or timetable, so ask at the terminal. We could not confirm that ride app drivers pick up at the parks for the return, so check the app before you go or arrange the ride back with your taxi driver.
What you see
Visit Paraguay describes falls more than 40 metres high, with three main drops and several smaller ones, and mist rising around them.
In the municipal park, Última Hora reports built trails, viewpoints and a panoramic elevator 40 metres tall that brings visitors face to face with the falls, plus an open air amphitheatre used for concerts. Across at Parque Aventura Monday, the entry ticket covers two viewpoints, the Mirador de las Cataratas del Paraguay and the Mirador de los Vencejos, and six trails through the forest.
At the park
Visit Paraguay mentions trails through native forest, a tree top circuit (arborismo) and a zipline around the falls, and a restaurant on a large terrace with a view of the water. Última Hora also lists arborismo and a zipline in the municipal park.
Parque Aventura Monday lists these on its own site:
- Included with entry: the viewpoints and trails, a raft crossing on the Laguna de los Guayabos, a playground, a hummingbird station, toilets and Wi-Fi.
- Adventure activities, paid separately: a 275 metre zipline toward the falls, canyoning down a basalt wall, archery, paintball, rafting on the Monday, a tree top circuit, a children's zipline, and the Travesía Guaraní, a descent through the forest to the riverbed.
- Restaurante: a restaurant inside the park with more than 30 dishes and tables looking over the falls.
Activity prices, age and weight limits are in the box above.
Tips
- Cash or card. Neither park publishes its payment methods, so carry some cash in guaraníes as a backup and check before you go.
- Sun and water. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, especially in summer.
- Shoes for wet paths. Spray and river mist keep paths and stairs near the falls damp, so wear shoes with grip.
- Busy season. Última Hora reports that December to February is the peak, with many visitors from Brazil.
