Three collections, one focused visit
Museo del Barro: plan one proper afternoon with Paraguayan art
Checked 16 October 2026
Choose Museo del Barro when you want time with Paraguayan art rather than a quick circuit of downtown landmarks. The Centro de Artes Visuales brings Indigenous, popular and contemporary art into one visit. Its location on Grabadores del Cabichuí is separate from the historic-center museum cluster, so make it the main stop of an afternoon and arrange the journey around its published opening hours.
Choose the day before arranging transport
- Tuesday–Thursday: 14:00–20:00; published admission ₲50,000.
- Friday–Saturday: 14:00–20:00; published free admission.
- No regular Sunday or Monday opening is listed. Confirm holidays and temporary changes.
- Allow about 90 minutes to two hours as our planning suggestion, plus transport; this is not an official tour duration.
- A guided visit needs a request at least 48 hours ahead. English availability must be confirmed.

Paid and free afternoons: what the official schedule says
The museum’s visitor-information page gives Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 14:00–20:00, at ₲50,000, and Friday and Saturday, 14:00–20:00, free. These are the published ordinary arrangements checked on 16 October, not a live door-status check. A Friday or Saturday makes sense if free admission is your priority; it does not guarantee a quieter visit or a particular exhibition.
Check the museum’s notices before travelling, especially on holidays. We have not verified last-entry rules, concessions, payment methods or special-event charges. The ordinary schedule does not list Sunday or Monday opening. Do not arrive outside it expecting staff to let you in: the official page describes a separately arranged out-of-hours opening, not a walk-in alternative.
Use the three collections to give your visit a shape
Begin with a question that interests you: materials, a particular community’s work, printmaking or the relationship between everyday objects and art. You do not need to see every case to have a useful visit. The order below is a suggested way to look, not a fixed floor route or a promise that every work is on display.
- Museo de Arte Indígena: the museum describes ceramics, carving, featherwork, textiles, masks and basketry by Paraguay’s different Indigenous peoples. Read the maker and community information where available rather than treating these as one anonymous tradition.
- Museo del Barro’s popular-art collection: look for connections among pottery, religious carving, masks and ñandutí lace. The collection’s scope extends well beyond clay.
- Museo Paraguayo de Arte Contemporáneo: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, objects and installations offer a different set of questions about artistic expression.
Ask which rooms and temporary exhibitions are open that day. A dated announcement on the homepage is not proof that the exhibition is still running. Collection descriptions explain the holdings; they are not a guaranteed display checklist.
Book a guide before the day, especially for English
The official visitor page asks for at least 48 hours’ notice: guides are not permanently present. It lists a standard guided visit at ₲200,000 for a maximum of 20 people, and says to ask about visits in English. Treat that as a separate listed tour service; the page does not establish that ordinary admission is included. Confirm language, total cost, headcount, meeting point and acceptance of your booking directly with the museum.
Reservations: 0993 360 033 or info@museodelbarro.org. The page requests cancellation at least 24 hours ahead and punctual arrival, with up to ten minutes’ tolerance. A request is not a confirmed reservation. The Gabinete del Cabichuí requires an appointment by phone or email explaining the reason for the visit; do not assume it comes with ordinary admission or a standard tour.
Save the street address, then agree on the return
The museum’s contact page gives Grabadores del Cabichuí 2716, between Cañada and Emeterio Miranda, Asunción 1401. The map uses the named museum and address, not the courtyard photograph’s camera coordinates. Check the entrance and a permitted pickup point with your driver or companions.
Use our transport guide for the wider options. The museum publishes bus references, but we have not checked current branch routes, stop locations or the last connection for your date. Verify those before relying on a bus. Traffic makes a fixed cross-city journey time unhelpful; budget the outward and return trips separately from the museum visit.
Check the details that could change your visit
If step-free entry, an accessible toilet, somewhere to sit or assistance matters, contact the museum with your needs before setting off. We have not inspected a continuous accessible route or confirmed facilities. Ask staff about photography, flash, bags and any room-specific restrictions; an image’s open license does not give permission to photograph every work.
The official homepage describes El almacén de doña Estela, the museum shop, and a small specialist bookshop. Keep browsing optional, confirm today’s opening and stock, and budget purchases separately. Do not count on a café, refreshments or a shop purchase being included.
A manageable independent afternoon
For example, aim to arrive around 14:30 on a confirmed opening day, spend roughly 90 minutes to two hours on the collections you care about, then leave a little time for an optional shop browse and your agreed pickup. Those times are our suggestion, not a reservation or an official guided-tour length. Start earlier or allow longer if you enjoy reading closely; do not make the final hour your only option without checking last entry.
For another day, compare the museum overview or the Palma–Manzana–Puerto walk. Check the rainy-day guide if weather changes the journey. Ordinary entry and a pre-booked guided visit have separate terms; choose the one you actually need.
Recovery follow-up, 27 October 2026: the museum’s own information still lists Tuesday–Thursday 14:00–20:00 at ₲50,000 and free Friday–Saturday 14:00–20:00. The 48-hour guided-visit request remains listed. Confirm last entry, availability and any special arrangements directly.
