Studying at Asunción's Instituto Municipal de Arte: where to start

Sources checked 30 October 2026

If you want to take music, acting, singing or dance seriously while living in Asunción, the Instituto Municipal de Arte (IMA) deserves a closer look. It brings several municipal schools together in the historic centre. Choosing a school means finding out about its admission process and the time it expects from you, rather than arriving at the building and hoping to join whatever is happening.

This guide is for people considering a course of study. If you mainly want a regular recreational activity, compare the Centro Paraguayo Japonés as well. Neither institution's name tells you whether a particular course is suitable for an adult beginner, so explain your experience and ask about the actual class.

Choose the school before planning the application

The IMA's institutional directory lists schools of drama, dance, broadcasting, singing and music, plus children's arts and a youth theatre workshop. They share an institution but do not all share an admission route. A performance you enjoyed at an IMA event is a useful introduction; it is not evidence that the related course is open to new students today.

For instrumental study, look for the Conservatorio Municipal de Música “Agustín Barrios”. For singing, the school is “Sofía Mendoza”; for acting, look for the Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramático “Roque Centurión Miranda”, often abbreviated to EMAD. Keeping those names handy helps when you search the municipal site or ask where your enquiry should go.

Before choosing between them, think about what you want to be doing six months from now. Learning an instrument from the beginning, preparing for a formal performance and exploring a hobby after work can require different teaching formats. Ask how much individual practice, rehearsal and attendance the proposed course requires. Do not assume all the work happens during the advertised class hours.

The published 2026 admission dates have passed

The 2026 admissions notice scheduled applications and auditions in February and March, with classes beginning on 9 March. Auditions were free. Most schools listed enrolment at Gs. 466,000, with separate rates for children's arts and youth theatre, plus Gs. 6,100 in stamps.

Those are historical 2026 figures, not a new intake announcement or a quotation for 2027. At this guide's October review, we have not established another open application window. Ask the school whether there is a later entry route or whether you should prepare for its next announced call. An archived page with “inscriptions open” in the title can still be describing February.

The practical next step is to use the school contacts on that notice and ask for the current requirements. If an audition is needed, request its format and the material you should prepare before booking a date. If you have studied elsewhere, ask whether prior experience changes the entry process. Do not presume that previous study guarantees admission or placement in a particular year.

What does “free teaching” mean for your budget?

The institutional page describes the IMA's teaching as free, while the admissions notice lists registration charges. Read those statements together: a free-teaching description should not be turned into a promise of zero total expense.

Ask the school to separate the enrolment charge, any required stamps, materials and any other costs that apply to the programme you want. For music, that might mean clarifying what equipment you need access to outside class; for performing arts, ask whether the school specifies clothing or supplies. These are budgeting questions, not additional fees we have verified.

Plan around the full term of study rather than the first payment alone. Transport and time away from work may be more significant than an individual materials purchase. If you are deciding between two schools, compare the actual weekly timetable and rehearsal expectations alongside the amount due at enrolment.

If your previous education was outside Paraguay

The public notice is written for the institution's normal admission cycle and includes course-specific age and education conditions. It does not resolve every case involving foreign school records, identity documents or a different educational system.

Explain which programme interests you and where you completed your previous studies. Ask what evidence the school needs and whether it must be translated or otherwise processed. Do that before paying for paperwork: this guide does not establish that any particular certification or document treatment is necessary for your case.

Ask about the teaching language and how the audition or interview is conducted. Being comfortable ordering lunch in Spanish and following fast instructions during a rehearsal can be quite different experiences. A candid conversation with the school helps you judge whether to begin now or first strengthen the language skills you will need. Our Spanish-learning guide covers options elsewhere in the city.

Finding the right building and office

The IMA is on Presidente Franco at Montevideo. Use the institution's map location and confirm the entrance and school office before travelling. The general culture website also displays an Ayolas 129 footer address; that belongs to cultural administration and should not replace the IMA venue address.

The admissions page has a school-by-school contact directory. Start there rather than sending your application to a general municipal form. Office hours on a recruitment notice are not necessarily current lesson times. When arranging a visit, ask which day someone from the relevant school can explain admissions and whether an appointment is required.

If stairs, a lift, adapted toilets, hearing support or another access issue affects you, ask about the particular classroom and route you would use. We have not completed an accessibility inspection of the building. Avoid relying on a generic map label as proof that every teaching space will work for you.

Meet the institution through its public work

The IMA news page publishes concerts, performances and other activities. Check the date, venue and ticket conditions for the specific event: some take place at the Teatro Municipal, rather than at the IMA itself.

A public performance can help you understand the range of work students do, but attendance is separate from enrolment. Follow the current school announcements for study and the event listing for a night out. For residents, keeping those two routes distinct avoids both missed auditions and a journey to the wrong building.

Official pages reviewed 30 October 2026. Current vacancies, future intake dates and individual admission eligibility remain for the relevant school to confirm.
