Volunteering in Asunción: find a role you can keep

Volunteering can give your week a purpose and a familiar group of people. Start with an organisation’s current programme and a commitment you can realistically keep. Ask about the role, registration and preparation before agreeing; a useful commitment is one you can show up for, understand and repeat.

These are starting points, not a promise of an open place on a particular date. Neither an office address nor an old campaign post is a confirmed volunteer meeting point.

TECHO: a team or a specific weekend

TECHO Paraguay’s volunteer page describes several kinds of work, so you do not have to assume every role is construction. It lists training and volunteering, community management, communications, resource development, construction and logistics, and detection and assignment.

The same page links available activities for weekend participation. Start there for an actual date. The programme emphasises young volunteers; ask about the age conditions, physical tasks and induction for the activity you choose. Availability in Paraguay does not automatically mean the task takes place inside Asunción.

Red Cross: ask about the entry route

The IFRC national-society directory lists the Paraguayan Red Cross at Brasil 216, corner of José Berges, Asunción, with its official contact channels. Use that directory to reach the organisation and ask who handles current volunteer intake.

Do not assume an emergency-response or health-related role is available to an untrained visitor. Ask what orientation, training, availability and documents apply. A volunteer programme is distinct from booking a course or requesting a service.

Send one clear first message

Say where you live, how much time you can realistically offer and which languages you use. Ask whether you can contribute for a single activity or need a longer commitment. Confirm transport, any costs or equipment, clothing, cancellation arrangements and the exact check-in point with the organiser.

“I live in Asunción and can usually help on Saturday mornings. I speak Spanish and English. Which current activity could I register for, and what preparation does it need?”

Once accepted, follow the programme’s instructions about tools, photos and contact with the community. Register individually through the organisation’s official channel and keep participants’ private details out of public posts. Acceptance to one activity does not confirm a place on another date.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreign resident volunteer?

Ask the organisation about the specific programme, identification, language and commitment. The sources checked do not establish blanket eligibility for every activity or nationality.

Can I just arrive at the office?

An office address is a contact point, not an invitation to an activity. Register or confirm arrangements with the coordinator first.

Do I need to speak perfect Spanish?

Explain your actual level and ask what the role requires. Do not assume an English-only placement is available; communications, logistics and community-facing work can have different needs.

The Open Asu community is a place for a specific local question. Browse the practical guides for more everyday information about Asunción.

Sources checked on 17 October 2026: TECHO Paraguay: volunteer routes; TECHO Paraguay: current activities; IFRC: Paraguayan Red Cross directory. These are published sources, not a report of an in-person visit or a booking. Check current access and arrangements with the organisation.

Recovery follow-up, 26 October 2026: TECHO’s programme and activity entry pages remain available. IFRC’s public directory search result still identifies Brasil 216, but direct directory access was blocked during this check. Current intake, eligibility and meeting points require the organisation’s confirmation.
