Visa and Residency Basics for Paraguay
Ninety days as a visitor, extendable once. Beyond that, residency. Here are the rules and routes from Migraciones' own pages, with links. General information, not legal advice.
Visiting: the basics
Paraguay's migration office, the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, admits visitors for up to 90 calendar days, extendable once at your request, for no longer than the original stay. Migraciones decides on the extension.
You enter with a valid passport. Citizens of Mercosur members and associates (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador) can use their national ID card instead.
Whether you need a visa before you travel depends on your passport. Look up yours in the table on Migraciones' visa information page, and apply through the foreign ministry's online visa portal if you need one.
United States and Canada: the same table lists no tourist visa for stays up to 90 days under Law 7314 of August 13, 2024, valid until August 13, 2027. Traveling close to that date? Check the table again.
Living here: residency routes
The routes Migraciones publishes:
- Temporary residence (residencia temporal): for people who come to settle and carry out a lawful activity, with a card valid for up to 2 years.
- Permanent residence, through a change of category, backed by proof of economic solvency.
- SUACE and the Paraguay Investor Pass, for investors.
In June 2026, Resolution DNM 407/2026 set 12 ways to prove economic solvency for permanent residence: professionals, technicians, employees, self-employed people in trade or services, remote workers or digital nomads, property owners, shareholders or partners, farmers and ranchers, religious workers, retirees or pensioners, dependents, and students.
Documents, fees and processing times differ by route. Each official page above lists them, or ask a qualified immigration lawyer.
