Palacio de López: exterior views and how to check for a tour
Sources checked 6 November 2026
The Palacio de López is an active government building beside Asunción's bay. The simplest visit is an exterior stop from the surrounding public areas. Going inside is a different plan: look for an official guided-tour announcement, check that its date is still ahead, and follow that edition's registration instructions. Do not arrive expecting a museum ticket window.

Choose the visit you actually want
For the architecture: plan a short exterior stop on a downtown walk. Use the public areas that are open when you arrive and respect the security perimeter. The official tourism listing emphasizes restricted access. Its broad opening-hours field should not be read as permission to enter the palace or its grounds around the clock.
For the interior: search the municipal cultural programme for Secretos del Palacio. The city's tourism plan includes this circuit, but a programme announcement is not a confirmed reservation or a permanent weekly timetable.
Where to go
The palace is on El Paraguayo Independiente at the river-facing edge of the historic center. Open its map location. Use the name rather than an unverified street number when planning transport.
For an exterior visit, allow around 20–30 minutes as a flexible planning estimate. You may want longer for photographs, or less if the weather is uncomfortable. Public access can change with official activity. Do not assume that a pedestrian route, fence-side viewpoint or vehicle drop-off is available merely because it appears on a map.
A little history before you look up
The Municipal Council's account dates the start of construction to 1857, under the direction of Alonso Taylor, for a residence intended for Francisco Solano López. It describes neoclassical and Palladian influences. The building was damaged during the War of the Triple Alliance and later restored.
Rather than memorizing a list of rooms you may not be able to enter, look at the balance of the wings, the central tower and the long colonnades from an authorised public viewpoint. For deeper historical context, book a properly announced visit. This guide does not promise access to particular halls.
How to check Secretos del Palacio
- Start with Cultura y Turismo de Asunción and look for the latest announcement naming the palace.
- Check the full date, available session, registration deadline, cost, meeting point and required identification. An old search result can remain online after an event finishes.
- Follow the booking link supplied by the organiser. Previous official announcements directed visitors to asuncion.live, but availability there was not confirmed during this check.
- Keep the organiser's confirmation. If no current date is available, make an exterior visit or choose another cultural stop.
An official past event listing described free entry with limited places and advance registration, meeting at Plaza de los Desaparecidos. Those details explain the format; they are not a current offer or a promise that the next edition will use identical arrangements.
Access needs, photos and security
The municipality has announced an inclusive version of the circuit. If you need a step-free route, seating, interpretation or another adjustment, ask what the specific session provides before booking. A general inclusion announcement does not establish that every route or date has the same support.
For photographs, remain in permitted public space and follow staff instructions. Do not climb barriers, obstruct entrances or assume permission for a drone. We have not verified a dependable nightly illumination schedule, so avoid making a special trip on the promise that lights will switch on at a particular time.
Pair it with a nearby stop
Manzana de la Rivera is a useful companion stop, subject to its own opening and programme. For a broader route, use our historic-center guide. Leave room to change plans if the palace perimeter is restricted or the heat makes a long walk unpleasant.
Questions before you go
Can I walk inside without a booking? Do not plan on it. Follow a current official tour or open-house announcement.
Are tours always free? Past official editions were free with registration. Check the terms of the specific edition rather than assuming a permanent arrangement.
Is evening lighting guaranteed? No reliable current switch-on timetable was established. A daytime exterior visit is easier to plan around without that assumption.
