Libraries and reading rooms in Asunción: where to start
A library visit goes better when you know what you want to read. In Asunción, the Biblioteca Nacional is a useful starting point for Paraguayan books, reference material and newspapers. Its reading rooms do different jobs; a library card, a borrowed novel and a desk for your laptop are not interchangeable services.

Choose the collection before the trip
The library’s service directory separates these options. That makes a more useful first question than simply asking whether the building is open.
| You want to… | Start here | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Consult books or reference works | Sala Alfredo Viola | Whether the title is available and how consultation works |
| Read historical newspapers | Sala Carlos Antonio López | The newspaper, date and available format |
| Explore from home | The library’s digital collection and catalogue | Whether the item is online or only catalogued |

The Culture Secretariat lists De la Residenta 820, near Perú and general Monday–Friday hours of 07:00–19:00. Those are published general hours, not a promise that every desk, collection or special service follows the same timetable. Check with the library before a long journey, particularly around holidays.
- Write down the author, title or topic. For newspapers, include the publication and date range.
- Search the catalogue from the official library site. A catalogue record does not necessarily mean there is a downloadable book.
- Ask what identification, registration or appointment is needed, and whether your material can be consulted that day.
- If you want to work on a laptop, ask about desk access, charging and the room’s rules. Do not assume coworking facilities.
Use the digital route for a first look
The library publishes digitised materials and a digital-library entry point. Its services page describes reference help in person and remotely, and reproduction of suitable public-domain documents. Ask about the actual material, format, fee and turnaround before treating a reproduction request as an instant download.
The newspaper room is especially useful when your question is tied to a particular period. Its service description distinguishes nineteenth-century newspapers in digital form from twentieth-century and newer print holdings. Give staff a focused question rather than asking them to find “everything about Paraguay”.
Fit the library into your everyday routine
For a research errand, first confirm that the item and the right reading room will be available. Keep the title, author or newspaper dates on your phone and leave time for registration and consultation. If your aim is simply a quiet place to work, ask about desk access, laptop use and charging before making the trip. For talks and book events, check the library’s current notices; archived events do not establish today’s programme.
Frequently asked questions
Can I borrow books to take home?
The pages checked describe consultation and reading-room services. They do not establish a general take-home lending entitlement. Ask the library about your specific material.
Is the digital catalogue the same as the digital library?
No. A catalogue helps locate a work; only some materials are available as digital files. Check the item’s record and access instructions.
What should I check before bringing a laptop?
Ask about reading-room admission, identification or registration, desk access, charging and the rules for the room you need. A library service listing does not establish coworking facilities.

Recovery follow-up, 26 October 2026: the library’s current service page still distinguishes the Alfredo Viola and Carlos Antonio López rooms; the Culture Secretariat still publishes De la Residenta 820 and general weekday hours. Confirm room access directly.
